How much is the Sweet James scholarship?

The Safe Roads, Bright Futures Scholarship is a one-time $2,500 award for the 2026 academic year. We send it directly to your college, university, or trade school, and we may ask for proof of enrollment and academic standing before releasing funds.[1]

Why this topic? In 2023, 40,901 people died in motor vehicle crashes in the United States.[2] Distraction, impairment, and speed drive a large share of those deaths, and young drivers are hit hardest. We want to read what students think would change that.

What should my essay include?

Essay topic

Distracted, impaired, and reckless driving continue to contribute to serious injuries and fatalities across the United States. Despite growing public awareness and legislative efforts, young drivers remain especially vulnerable to these risks.

In your essay, analyze the social, psychological, and legal factors that contribute to unsafe driving behaviors. Using academic research, traffic safety studies, behavioral science insights, and public policy analysis, explain why these behaviors occur and how targeted prevention strategies could reduce roadway injuries and fatalities.[1]

Angles you might take:

  • Risk perception and decision-making behind distracted or impaired driving.
  • Whether laws like graduated licensing or hands-free rules actually work.
  • Peer influence and social norms in teen driving.
  • Policy, technology, or education ideas that could cut crashes.
  • A data-driven look at traffic safety trends.

To be eligible, your essay needs an original title, citations throughout, and a bibliography of every source you used.[1]

When is the deadline, and how is the winner chosen?

Applications close October 15, 2026. Late submissions are not considered.[1]

After the deadline, a selection committee reads every eligible essay and scores it on quality of writing, strength of research, and originality. Age, race, religion, gender, national origin, familial status, and other protected characteristics play no part in the decision. Depending on volume, this takes one to three months. We notify the recipient by email and announce the winner here and in a press release. If we need anything from you during review, we’ll reach out directly.[1]

Why Sweet James funds this scholarship

We represent people hurt in car, truck, and motorcycle crashes across California, Arizona, Georgia, Texas, Nevada, and New Mexico. Most of those cases trace back to a driver who was distracted, impaired, or going too fast. We see the aftermath every week.[3]

A scholarship won’t fix that on its own. But students in public health, psychology, policy, engineering, and law are the people who will design the next round of prevention. We’d rather fund that thinking early than meet its absence in a courtroom later.
