Ricardo Castorena Killed after Pile of Wood Falls on Him [Costa Mesa, CA]
Ricardo Castorena Dead in Workplace Accident at Ganahl Lumber
COSTA MESA, CA (December 23, 2019) – An employee at a lumber yard identified as Ricardo Castorena, 28, of Santa Ana, died after a pile of wood fell on him.
Firefighters with Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue rushed to Ganahl Lumber in the 1100 block of Bristol Street. They responded at around 9:30 p.m. Friday for a confined space rescue, according to Capt. Joe Noceti.
First arriving firefighters discovered the victim trapped against a forklift. He was under a heavy pile of high-stored lumber that shifted and toppled over, said Noceti.
The man died at the scene. Firefighters worked for approximately three hours to remove the pile of wood off of him so the coroner could investigate.
What happened appeared to be accidental, Noceti said. Yet, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also conducted their investigation.
