22-Year-Old Man Pronounced Dead after Pedestrian Collision near Mercer Street

SEATTLE, WA (March 12, 2024) – Early Wednesday morning, Esteban Cortes was fatally struck in a pedestrian crash on Interstate 5.

Authorities responded to the northbound lanes, just north of Mercer Street around 12:45 a.m., on February 28th.

Officers say a vehicle driven by Cortes suffered significant tire and rim damage and was stopped on the right shoulder. Shortly after, the 45-year-old male driver of a 2024 Lexus ES with two passengers struck Cortes while he was crossing the northbound lanes.

Despite life-saving efforts, medics pronounced 22-year-old Cortes, from Marysville dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, paramedics transported the Lexus driver to Harborview Medical Center for precaution. Once available, further information will be provided.
