David Lopez Arrested after Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 101 [San Luis Obispo, CA]
Driver Injured in Wrong-Way Collision near TV Tower Road
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (April 1, 2022) – Early Sunday morning, police arrested David Lopez following a wrong-way crash on Highway 101.
Officers said the crash happened just before 5:15 a.m., just south of TV Tower Road. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after.
Investigators say 24-year old Lopez, of Santa Maria was driving a Dodge Challenger north, in the southbound lanes.
Shortly after, 37-year-old Duane Ardent of Atascadero, who was driving a 2016 Toyota 4Runner, was unable to move out of the way in time and hit the Challenger. In addition, 51-year-old Chris Beard, of Templeton, was driving a 2016 Honda Civic in the right hand lane, and also struck Lopez.
The left front of Lopez’s Challenger struck the left front of the Toyota, causing the Toyota to spin out and roll over several times. Debris from the collision became airborne and struck the front of Beard’s vehicle, causing minor damage.
Ardent suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Sierra Vista Hospital.
Additionally, Lopez continued driving the wrong way until he was stopped by officers a short distance away. Crews arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
