One Killed, Several Injured in DUI Crash near California Street [Ventura, CA]

Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 101 Left One Fatality, Several Injured

VENTURA, CA (December 29, 2021) – A DUI crash near California Street left one dead and several people injured early Sunday morning.

The Highway 101 incident took place shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday south of California Street, the CHP’s Ventura office reported.

Furthermore, authorities arrested the driver in the wrong-way crash on suspicion of felony DUI. Additionally, they charged him with gross vehicular manslaughter, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Moreover, the driver of the Nissan, an 18-year-old Ojai man, died at the scene, CHP officials said. Meanwhile, a passenger in the Nissan, also an 18-year-old Ojai man, suffered moderate injuries.

Consequently, after the initial collision, a 2017 GMC Sierra pickup truck traveling northbound also hit the Nissan. The 18-year-old Oak View man driving the pickup suffered minor injuries, authorities said. Meanwhile, his passenger, a 19-year-old Ojai man, suffered moderate injuries.

The wrong-way driver suffered major injuries. Paramedics transported him to Ventura County Medical Center.

Authorities closed the northbound freeway for about five hours as authorities investigated.
