Lakewood Multi-Vehicle Crash on 5 Freeway in Injures Two People
LAKEWOOD, WA (November 21, 2019) — Two people sustained injuries following a multi-vehicle crash on the 5 Freeway Monday morning.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the incident started at 1:00 a.m. A semi-truck loaded with shrimp and cheesecake caught fire in the northbound lanes near the Berkeley Avenue Southwest Exit. The area is north of the main gate for JBLM.
And then, an SUV came onto the crash scene at around 4 a.m. The driver was fleeing from the Thurston County Sheriff’s deputies.
The SUV collided into several emergency vehicles. That includes two fire engines, a patrol car, and a WSDOT vehicle. It also crashed into a civilian car. The emergency vehicles were partially blocking the freeway before the incident.
The Thurston County Sheriff’s deputies said Tumwater police originally asked the fleeing driver has an obstructed license plate. They asked the driver to pull over at approximately 3:20 a.m. However, the driver took off. In addition, reports indicated that they had several warrants and a suspended license.
The Tumwater police and the Thurston County Sheriff’s deputies made several attempts to stop the driver. After that, the fleeing vehicle ended up crashing into several emergency vehicles in the northbound lanes of the freeway.
Emergency responders took two occupants of the SUV to the hospital with serious injuries.
According to WSDOT, the crash also led to significant backup which stretched to approximately 13 miles at one point.
