34-Year-Old Pedro Pelayo Identified as Burrtec Waste Truck Driver Killed in Fontana Crash
FONTANA, CA (February 7, 2020) – Authorities identified 34-year-old Pedro Pelayo of Fontana as the driver killed in a garbage truck crash on Cherry Avenue, Friday evening.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 5:06 PM. A Burrtec Waste garbage truck collided with a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup near Whittram Avenue. Then, the garbage truck veered to the right and slammed into a traffic light pole.
Emergency responders rushed Pelayo to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where he later died. Meanwhile, the Chevy driver, a 48-year-old Fontana man, was also transported to the hospital with unspecified injuries.
Investigators believe that one of the vehicles failed to stop for a red traffic signal. CHP officers continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
