37-Year-Old Leonel Tinoco Identified as Driver Killed in Santa Maria Crash
SANTA MARIA, CA (February 7, 2020) – Authorities identified 37-year-old Leonel Tinoco of Santa Maria as the driver killed in a two-vehicle collision on West Stowell Road, early Friday morning.
According to the Santa Maria Police Department, the incident happened at about 1:20 AM. Due to unknown reasons, Tinoco had driven over nearby railroad tracks and crashed into a light pole. Then, his stopped vehicle was broadsided by another vehicle.
Emergency responders pronounced Tinoco dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the other driver, identified as 25-year-old Michael Lee, was arrested for DUI and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail.
Investigators believe that Tinoco and Lee knew each other and were together shortly before the crash. In addition, officers also suspect that alcohol and speed affected both drivers at the time of the collision. Authorities will release additional information once it becomes available.
