OAKDALE, CA (February 12, 2020) – 61-year-old John Hughes of Newman died after a Chevrolet pickup struck him on Highway 120 on Monday, February 10.
California Highway Patrol Officer Ming Hsu said that at about 6:45 p.m., Hughes walked north on the east side of Highway 120 near Valley Home Road. Then a Chevrolet moving the same direction at approximately 45 mph struck him.
First-responders started CPR on Hughes and transported him to Oak Valley Hospital, where he died.
After striking Hughes, the Chevrolet moved north. Then it went to the left where the highway curves to the west.
Hsu stated that at around 9:30 p.m., 28-year-old Matthew Keith called CHP dispatch and reported he struck an unknown object.
After hearing about the crash on social media, he decided to contact the police, Hsu said. Officers and a supervisor went to his house in Oakdale. They determined he is involved in the collision and found out he was under the influence.
Officers arrested Keith on suspicion of DUI causing injury or death. Hsu said there will be further investigation to determine whether he will also face charges of hit-and-run.
