66-Year-Old Man Dies in Pedestrian Accident near Shalane Avenue
BAKERSFIELD, CA (November 17, 2023) – Gustavo Gabriel Lopez was involved in a fatal pedestrian collision on Kern County Canyon Road.
Dispatchers received calls in the area around 6:13 p.m., near Shalane Avenue on November 2nd.
Based on the initial investigation, an elderly man in a wheelchair crossed in a northerly direction, outside of a marked crosswalk.
There, the man was struck by a 2015 Nissan traveling westbound on Kern Canyon Road at an unknown rate of speed. Upon impact, the male pedestrian was ejected from his wheelchair, leaving him with major injuries.
Responding paramedics transported the 66-year-old man to Kern Medical for immediate treatment.
On November 11th, the elderly male victim died at the hospital. The Kern County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased victim once the next of kin has been notified.
Police later identified the Nissan driver as 19-year-old Gustavo Gabriel Lopez of Bakersfield. It was unclear if Lopez is currently facing charges.
