16-Year-Old Victim Killed in School Bus Accident near Blue Water Road

HELENDALE, CA (October 19, 2022) – Friday afternoon, Benjamin Chavez was killed in an ATV collision on Helendale Road.

The fatal incident happened around 12:23 p.m., near Blue Water Road in the community of Helendale, known as Silver Lakes. 

According to the California Highway Patrol, an eastbound 2005 Suzuki Quadsport ATV failed to stop and collided with a 2019 Thomas Type 1 school bus.

Authorities claimed that 37 passengers occupied the bus at the time of the incident. 

The ATV rider sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later identified the deceased rider as 16-year-old Chavez, of Oro Grande. 

All students on the bus were safe and accounted for, the Riverside Preparatory School officials said. Medics also treated the 59-year-old male bus driver, who sustained minor injuries. 

At this time, the California Highway Patrol Victorville station continues to investigate the Helendale ATV-bus collision.
