Two Drivers Killed in Fatal Three-Vehicle Accident in Contra Costa County
CROCKETT, CA (March 22, 2022) – Early Sunday morning, Madyson James and Ruiju Ma were killed in a fiery wrong-way collision on Interstate 80.
The incident occurred around 3:41 a.m., on the eastbound lanes of I-80 near the Carquinez Bridge.
According to reports, the driver of a Honda SUV was heading west in the eastbound lanes. As a result, the Honda collided head-on with an oncoming Tesla.
Upon impact, the Tesla overturned, trapping the driver inside. Amidst the chaos, the Honda landed on top of the Tesla, causing major damage to both vehicles. Shortly after, the driver of a Toyota Camry crashed into both vehicles, igniting a fire.
Eventually, medics pronounced both the Honda and Tesla drivers dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the Toyota driver sustained minor injuries.
The crash blocked all eastbound lanes for several hours while the officers investigated the scene, but they reopened around 7:36 a.m.
As of the time, it is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash continues.
