34-Year-Old Driver Dies in Wrong-Way Collision near Avenal

AVENAL, CA (March 4, 2022) – Early Monday morning, one unidentified driver lost his life following a tragic traffic accident on Interstate 5.

The crash happened around 12:45 a.m., on February 28. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to a call about an SUV driver traveling the wrong-way on the freeway. As a result, the northbound SUV collided with a southbound Subaru.

Despite the fact that the collision was minor, the SUV’s driver walked away from the scene after the initial impact.

Officers then located the man walking northbound on Interstate 5 and attempted to stop him; however, the man continued running into traffic, where an oncoming car struck him.

Responding paramedics declared the SUV driver, a 34-year-old Chico resident, dead at the scene.

Officials said it’s unclear why the suspect fled the scene. Meanwhile, the driver of the car that hit the man had been treated at Coalinga Regional Hospital for minor injuries.

Authorities do not currently believe that drugs or alcohol were factors. However, an active investigation remains ongoing.
