Tana and Don Powell Killed in Multi-Car Collision near South Carson Street
CARSON CITY, NV (November 23, 2021) – 24-year-old Rolando Gonzalez-Otazo Roney, was arrested after a crash on Highway 50, Tuesday.
According to reports, Roney crashed a Ford F-350 while towing an overweight boat. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after.
Due to suspected brake failure near the intersection of South Carson Street, he lost control and struck another vehicle, killing two passengers inside.
As per troopers, the boat split from the vehicle following the incident and headed eastward for several hundred yards.
Medics say nine people suffered injuries in the crash. Additionally, the incident included eight automobiles and two trailers.
The coroner’s office later identified the two deceased victims as Tana Powell and Don Powell, a married couple.
Investigators say 70-year-old Tana died at the scene. Meanwhile, 74-year-old Don was pronounced dead after arriving to Renown Regional Medical Center by Careflight.
Police later arrested Rolando Gonzalez-Otazo Roney and booked him into Carson Jail. Roney was charged with reckless driving resulting in death, operating an unsafe vehicle, obstruction, failure to obey a red light, and driving without a license.
