Mother Killed in Big-Rig Accident near Haskell Avenue in Encino

ENCINO, CA (August 17, 2021)Aimee Garcia was killed, and Cesar Torres was arrested after a wrong-way crash on 101 Freeway Thursday night.

Officers responded around 7:00 p.m., on the southbound lanes of the freeway just west of Haskell Avenue.

According to reports, Torres was driving a 2003 Lincoln Navigator north in the southbound lanes when he struck a big-rig head-on.

Reports indicate that the big-rig driver attempted to avoid the collision, but was unable to due to the driver’s erratic driving.

Following the crash, Torres exited the vehicle and attempted to flee the scene on foot. Shortly after, officers detained him using a Taser.

According to CHP, Torres was “combative” and physically assaulted police.

Paramedics took Garcia’s husband and four children to a hospital for further treatment.

Authorities identified 26-year-old Aimee Garcia, and pronounced her dead at the scene.

Officers later identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cesar Iban Torres, of Los Angeles. He was held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in lieu of $1 million bail.

Moreover, the children inside the SUV suffered minor injuries from the impact.

The truck driver, 56-year-old Jose Garcia Lopez of San Diego, complained of pain and was treated on site.

To help with funeral expenses, the family of Aimee Garcia created a GoFundMe page.

Per reports, the crash prompted the partial closure of the 101 Freeway.
