68-Year-Old Rider Killed in Motorcycle Crash on Highway 101

WILLITS, CA (May 17, 2021) – Wayne Berry, 68, of Arroyo Grande died Wednesday morning after a motorcycle crash on Highway 101. 

The accident occurred near Main Street around 2:55 a.m. on May 13, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Michael Lee Confer was driving a northbound 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix on the highway when he crossed the double yellow line and collided with Berry’s southbound 2007 BMW motorcycle.

The collision threw the motorcycle and Berry over the side of the elevated bypass, while the Pontiac caught fire.

The Mendocino County Coroner’s Office later pronounced Berry dead at the scene, due to the extent of his injuries.

Meanwhile, rescuers rushed Confer to Howard Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Authorities then arrested Michael Confer and booked into the Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
