Fatal Big Rig Collision Killed One; DUI Driver Arrested on Interstate 5 Crash in Stanislaus
STANISLAUS, CA (April 26, 2021) – Elpidio Tovar was killed in a deadly big rig collision on Interstate 5, Wednesday morning.
The fatal accident happened just after 1:00 in the morning of April 21, on northbound Interstate 5 just outside of Westley.
The incident began when a big rig driver noticed a red sedan swerving across both lanes. Then, the semi-truck driver attempted to stop the intoxicated driver and boxed him in with his trailer.
As a result, it brought traffic to a halt and caused a pileup involving three big-rigs.
First responders arrived at the scene and declared the driver of the third big rig dead on the scene. The CHP said the driver was 41-year-old resident Elpidio Tovar of Five Points.
Meanwhile, the other big rig drivers sustained minor injuries.
Furthermore, officials arrested the driver of the red sedan, 40 year-old Daniel Avilan-Tirado, of Stockton, on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
The deadly crash and the DUI arrest are still under investigation.
