Carlos Sotelo Killed in Pedestrian Crash on Voigt Drive [San Diego, CA]
19-Year-Old Skateboarder Fatally Struck by Vehicle on Campus in San Diego
San Diego, CA (February 5, 2021 ) – Late Saturday night, 19-year-old Carlos Rey Sotelo, was killed in a pedestrian crash on Voigt Drive.
The incident occurred around 11:35 p.m., just west of Engineer Lane. Sotelo was riding his skateboard on a steep hill when he suddenly lost control and fell to the ground.
Meanwhile, a 20-year-old driver of a westbound Nissan Maxima ran over Sotelo while he was still lying on the middle of the road. However, their identity has not been provided.
Due to the impact, Sotelo was pronounced dead on scene.
UCSD Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs reported in an email that Sotelo was a first year electrical engineering student. He was also an active member in the Student Success Coaching Program and worked on campus.
On behalf of the victim’s family, a GoFundMe was created to help them through this difficult time.
