Marcus Castro Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Laveen

 
LAVEEN, AZ (January 10, 2021) – A man was killed following a hit-and-run crash Sunday in Laveen, authorities said.
 
The crash happened on the Loop 202 South near Southern Avenue.
 
According to court records, a gold minivan and a blue passenger vehicle collided. When Phoenix fire arrived at the scene, they performed CPR on a male occupant of the blue passenger vehicle before taking him to a hospital.
 
Despite life-saving efforts, the patient succumbed to his injuries. Authorities later identified the victim as 70-year-old Douglas Lee Smith.
 
The driver of the minivan fled the scene on foot. He was seen running eastbound through Salt River Bottom.
 
Less than 30 minutes later, Phoenix Police Department located the driver, 26-year-old Marcus Xavier Castro near 51st and Southern avenues.
 
Police arrested Castro with reckless manslaughter and leaving the scene of the crash.
