Deadly Wrong-Way Crash on 80 Freeway in Pinole
PINOLE, CA (January 8, 2021) – A man was killed following a wrong-way crash early Friday morning in Pinole, CHP officials said.
The crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on eastbound 80 Freeway, just west of Pinole Valley Road exit.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a silver Toyota Camry was traveling the wrong way near Carquinez Bridge, about 10 miles away from the exit. It then collided into a silver Ford Focus.
The impact left the driver of the Ford trapped in the driver’s seat. Firefighters had to cut him free with hydraulic tools.
Despite life-saving efforts, the Ford driver later died at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. Authorities only described him as a 46-year-old man. They did not release his identity pending notification of his next of kin.
The driver of the Camry, a 78-year-old Concord woman, sustained moderate injuries.
A 39-year-old Vallejo woman who was a passenger in the Ford survived with minor injuries, the CHP said.
The CHP said no arrest has been made at this time. They urged witnesses to contact its Walnut Creek office at 925-646-4980.
