5 Bicyclists Dead, More Hurt in Fatal Crash with Box Truck on Highway 95
SEARCHLIGHT, NV (December 14, 2020) — Officials identified the five bicyclists killed in a collision on Highway 95.
Based on reports, Erin Ray – a real estate agent and an avid cyclist – was one of the nearly 20 bicyclists who were on an informal ride to celebrate a retirement.
An investigation showed that the group set out early Thursday from M Resort in Henderson to complete the 130-mile Nipton Loop. The group, as per the members who survived, has been doing this for the past 15 years.
As the bicyclists approached Searchlight, winds started to pick up. One of the riders, identified as Michael Anderson, said that that’s when about seven riders broke off from the larger group.
The small group subsequently slid behind their safety escort vehicle for cover, which was a silver Subaru hatchback carrying food, water, and spare tires. Anderson, meanwhile, stayed with the larger group.
Suddenly, a white unmarked box truck crashed through the seven bicyclists from behind, pinning them against the Subaru. The crash happened at about 9:40 a.m. on Thursday on southbound Highway 95 near Nelson Road, where the speed limit is 75 miles per hour.
Seven cyclists ejected from their bikes. Of the seven, five died at the scene. Officials identified them as: 39-year-old Erin Michelle Ray, 57-year-old Michael Todd Murray, 48-year-old Aksoy Ahmet, 57-year-old Thomas Chamberlin Trauger, and 41-year-old Gerrard Suarez Nieva.
NHP reports one of the cyclists was airlifted to University Medical Center Trauma. The individual was in critical condition but is now stable. The Subaru driver was also transported and is stable.
The box truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated in the investigation.
Officials have ruled out impairment as a factor in the crash which remains under investigation.
Our hearts go out to the loved ones of Erin Ray, Michael Murray, Aksoy Ahmet, Thomas Trauger, and Gerrard Nieva.
