Pilot Dies in Lakeport Aircraft Crash
LAKEPORT, CA (August 7, 2020) – A pilot who died in a glider crash Friday last week in Lakeport has been identified by authorities.
The sheriff’s office were notified about an overdue aircraft around 5:40 p.m. by the Williams Soaring Center.
According to the center, a LAK-17B FES MINI Glider had left Lampson Airfield at 2:00 p.m. and was due in Mendocino County.
The center was able to provide last known GPS coordinates. Sheriff’s deputies went to the area of Matthews Road in Lakeport and found the crash site. They also located the deceased pilot.
The victim was identified as Matthew Herron, 89, of San Rafael. He was the only occupant of the aircraft.
Deputies secured the scene and contacted the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will be conducting an investigation into the crash.
