Train Crash on Edison Highway Kills Motorist and Badly Injures Passenger
BAKERSFIELD, CA (August 5, 2020) – A motorist who died after being struck by a train Wednesday morning in Bakersfield has been identified.
The crash happened around 11:00 a.m. on Edison Highway near Fairfax Road.
According to sheriff’s deputies, 21-year-old Zanhi Williams was driving his silver Nissan Altima at a high rate of speed. While attempting to pass another vehicle, he lost control of his car.
The Nissan drifted to the left across a raised median and the westbound lanes. It then overturned on the railroad tracks, where it was struck by an eastbound BNSF freight train.
The impact ejected both Williams and his passenger, 21-year-old Bonnie Jeban.
Williams died at the scene. Jeban was transported to Kern Medical Center with major injuries.
CHP officials are still investigating the crash to determine the other factors involved.
