Jesus Tamariz and Passenger Rescued after Plumas County Big Rig Crash

 
PLUMAS COUNTY, CA (July 28, 2020) — Officers rescued 48-year-old Jesus Tamariz of Ceres and his passenger after a big rig crashed into Feather River.
 
The incident happened on Highway 70 near Tobin Bridge at around 4:05 p.m. on Friday, July 24.
 
According to reports, Tamariz drove a 2018 Freightliner that pulled a 2005 box trailer westbound on Highway 70.
 
Tamariz traversed a left curve in the roadway and allowed the right-side tires of the Freightliner to drive on the north shoulder. He then made an unsafe turn to the left and it caused the Freightliner to lose control. The Freightliner continued to drive across both lanes of Highway 70 and slammed into the guardrail.
 
The Freightliner flipper over the steep embankment. It landed on several rocks in the Feather River with the cab submerged. The box trailer came to stop on rocks out of the water.
 
Tamariz and his passenger went out of the Freightliner and swam to safety on a rock. They waited until Search and Rescue arrived to help them.
 
At the time of the incident, Tamariz drove without a Class A endorsement and a suspended motor carrier permit.
 
The incident shut down Highway 70 and canceled the weekend’s recreational whitewater releases.
