Freeway Service Patrol Driver Killed after Traffic Accident on 280 Freeway near Farm Hill Boulevard

REDWOOD CITY, CA (July 27, 2020) — A Freeway Service Patrol driver was dead after a car crash on southbound 280 in Woodside on Tuesday, June 23.

The San Mateo County coroner’s office identified the victim as 61-year-old Dublin resident Mark Alarcon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, they received a call about the accident at about 3:40 p.m. on 280 Freeway north of Farm Hill Boulevard.

The CHP Redwood City office confirmed that a member of the Freeway Service Patrol assisted a driver on southbound 280 Freeway. After that, a lumber truck crashed into the FSP driver and his car, killing Alarcon.

The lumber truck driver remained on the scene of the collision. Authorities said it does not appear that the driver of the lumber truck was under the influence.

FSP gives aid to motorists during commute hours by providing gas, for example, to motorists who run out. The state of California pays for these services.

Officers blocked the right lanes as CHP officers investigated the incident. They also advised motorists to expect delays and use alternate routes to avoid the area. Lanes reopened shortly after 9:15 p.m.
