One Dead in Car Crash on Highway 99 [Bakersfield, CA]

One Fatally Hurt after Car Crash on Highway 99 at Merced Avenue

 
BAKERSFIELD, CA (July 23, 2020) — The California Highway Patrol reported a fatality after a fiery car crash on Highway 99 at Merced Avenue on Tuesday, July 21.
 
The California Highway Patrol received a call around 10:25 p.m. of a car engulfed in flames on the center median northbound Highway 99.
 
CHP said upon arrival, officers discovered a Honda Pilot facing southbound on the center median. It had major rear-end damage which caused it to burst in flames. They also found a man dead in the driver seat, according to CHP.
 
According to reports, 64-year-old Filberto Esparza drove a big rig northbound Highway 99 in the #3 traffic lane at a speed of 55 mph. He traveled directly behind another big rig, which exited at Merced Avenue. CHP said Esparza continued northbound in the #3 traffic lane and hit the rear of the Honda Pilot.
 
It is unclear if the man driving the Honda Pilot was stopped or moved at a slow rate of speed.
 
Officials diverted the traffic at Merced Avenue.
