17-Year-Old Salinas Boy Arrested, Three Passengers Critical after Watsonville DUI Crash

WATSONVILLE, CA (July 12, 2020) – A teen driver was arrested and three of his passengers sustained serious injuries in a DUI crash on Beach Street, Sunday evening.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 8:40 PM. A gray Nissan Altima was heading westbound on West Beach at a high rate of speed. As the vehicle approached Clearwater Lane, the teen driving the Nissan lost control and exited the road.

Then, the vehicle went into a ditch and struck a metal pole. The impact of the crash caused the vehicle to go airborne before hitting a wooden utility pole and rolling over. As per reports, the Nissan landed on its wheels in an agricultural field.

Two rear passengers were not secured in their seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicle.

Emergency crews transported three passengers, a 16-year-old girl, a 17-year-old girl, and an 18-year-old Salinas man, to Natividad Medical Center. The three victims sustained life-threatening injuries and remain in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the driver, identified as a 17-year-old Salinas boy, sustained minor injuries. Authorities later arrested him on suspicion of DUI. Then, he was taken to Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall.

CHP will release additional information once it becomes available.
