23-Year-Old Pedestrian Killed in Train Crash on Chapman Loop [STEILACOOM, WA]

Fatal Train Crash Involving Pedestrian on Chapman Loop in Steilacoom

 
STEILACOOM, WA (July 14, 2020) – A 23-year-old male pedestrian was killed in a train crash Tuesday afternoon in Steilacoom.
 
The crash happened around 4:00 p.m. in the vicinity of Chapman Loop.
 
According to investigators, the pedestrian was struck by a freight train in unclear circumstances.
 
There were no on ground witnesses to the accident. Steep terrain prevented rescue crews from reaching the site via land, investigators said.
 
West Pierce’s fire boat crew rescued the victim and transferred him to shore at Saltar’s Point.
 
A medical helicopter airlifted the victim to Harborview Medical Center but his condition deteriorated. Paramedics then took him to Madigan Army Medical Center.
 
Despite life-saving efforts, the victim was declared dead at the hospital.
 
The northbound freight train stopped at the scene. A southbound Amtrak Cascades passenger train also stopped for the investigation.
