Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 79 in Florence Starts Brush Fire
FLORENCE, AZ (July 10, 2020) – At least one person was killed following a multi-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in Florence.
The crash happened on Highway 79 at milepost 143.
According to reports, three vehicles collided head-on for unknown reasons. The impact caused at least one fatality and several injuries.
DPS officials said the crash involved a semi truck hauling hay, which forced the shutdown of the highway.
The crash also caused a fast-moving brush fire, as the hay from the semi truck caught fire.
The blaze is estimated to have burned 123-acres on the east side of the highway, according to Forestry officials. Winds are quickly spreading the fire through grass and brush.
Crews closed Highway 79 in both directions while they worked on the scene.
The identity of the deceased victim was not immediately available.
The crash is still under investigation to determine the exact cause and factors involved.
