Fatal Pedestrian Crash on 5 Freeway at La Costa Avenue

 
ENCINITAS, CA (July 9, 2020) – A man died in a pedestrian crash Thursday evening in Encinitas, CHP officials said.
 
The crash happened just before 10:00 p.m. on 5 Freeway, just south of La Costa Avenue.
 
Witnesses told officials the man was driving a small black vehicle recklessly before crashing on the freeway. After the crash, he got out of the car and began running through southbound lanes.
 
Moments later, a southbound vehicle struck the man, according to the CHP.
 
First responders pronounced the man dead at the scene. The identity of the victim was not immediately available.
 
It is unknown if the motorist that struck the victim stayed or fled the scene.
 
Authorities shut down the two right lanes of southbound 5 Freeway while they investigated the crash.
