Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on 5 Freeway near John Erreca Rest Area

 
MERCED COUNTY, CA (July 11, 2020) – Two people died following a multi-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in Merced County, CHP officials said.
 
The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. on 5 Freeway near the John Erreca Rest Area.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, a big rig failed to stop in slowed traffic and smashed into a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu, which overturned. It then triggered a chain-reaction crash involving seven vehicles.
 
First responders pronounced the Malibu driver and his female passenger dead at the scene. The driver was only described as a 63-year-old man.
 
Another driver was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.
 
CHP officials did not rule out intoxication as a factor. But they believe the big rig driver was distracted and did not see the slowing traffic in time.
 
An investigation into this fatal incident is ongoing.
