Two Killed in Fiery Rollover Crash on 8 Freeway near Jacumba Hot Springs [EAST COUNTY, CA]

East County Fiery Rollover Crash on 8 Freeway Kills Two and Seriously Injures One

 
EAST COUNTY, CA (July 9, 2020) – Two people were killed following a fiery rollover crash Thursday afternoon in the East County desert, authorities said.
 
The crash happened around 2:20 p.m. on 8 Freeway near Jacumba Hot Springs.
 
According to Cal Fire, a vehicle was traveling eastbound when it rolled over and caught fire.
 
Responding firefighters freed two people who were trapped in the vehicle with major injuries.
 
One of the two patients died at the scene, while the other was airlifted to a hospital.
 
When fire crews extinguished the burning vehicle, a third victim was found dead inside.
 
Firefighters also extinguished flames that spread from the burning vehicle to nearby vegetation. One person at the scene suffered smoke-inhalation injuries.
 
Authorities briefly shut down the freeway in both directions to allow the medical helicopter to land. Lanes were re-opened just before 3:30 p.m.
 
The crash remains under investigation.
