Isabella Cortes Killed in Carjacking Incident on Whittier Boulevard [PICO RIVERA, CA]

Carjacking in Pico Rivera Kills 13-Year-Old Girl and Injures 3 Siblings

 
PICO RIVERA, CA (July 5, 2020) – A 13-year-old girl died after a violent carjacking Sunday afternoon in Pico Rivera.
 
The incident happened around 2:00 p.m. in the area of Whittier Boulevard and Lindsey Avenue.
 
The girl and her three siblings were waiting in a van for their parents who ran into a restaurant to pick up food. A man then got into the driver’s seat of the van and told the children to get out.
 
The 18-year-old sibling briefly fought with the suspect before she got out of the van, along with her 11-year-old brother. Both sustained minor injuries.
 
The vehicle continued going at a high rate of speed, ejecting the 13-year-old girl and the 8-year-old boy.
 
Authorities said the girl hit a stationary object and she died at the scene. They identified her as Isabella Cortes.
 
Paramedics rushed the 8-year-old boy to a hospital with major injuries.
 
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Jose Aguilar of Los Angeles, slammed into another vehicle a few miles away. The suspect soon jumped out of the vehicle, ran toward the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area and tried to carjack another vehicle with the driver’s wife and child inside.
 
Street vendors detained him until deputies arrived.
 
Aguilar was later taken into custody.
