High-Speed Crash after Police Chase in San Bernardino Kills Driver and Teen Passenger

SAN BERNARDINO, CA (July 3, 2020) – A driver and his teen passenger died in a high-speed crash after a police chase Friday evening in San Bernardino.

Around 9:45 p.m., police received a report of an armed robbery at Del Taco in the 700 block of West 2nd Street.

A Dodge Charger, driven by 20-year-old Michael Mendoza Levario of San Bernardino, with two teen passengers, fled police.

Levario drove fast, west on 5th Street towards Mount Vernon Avenue, and could not make a turn at Flores Street. The Charger went off the roadway and over a guardrail. It became airborne and went about 175 feet into a concrete wall.

As a result, Levario and the 15-year-old boy died at the scene.

A 13-year-old boy in the car was critically injured. Paramedics rushed him to a hospital for proper treatment.

No other vehicles were involved.

Police did not know if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation. They asked anyone with information about the incident to call Detective Dan Acosta or Sergeant Jeff Harvey at 909-384-5792.
