Kyle Leventhal Killed in Fiery Rollover Crash on Highway 101 [ATASCADERO, CA]

Passenger Dies after Car Overturns and Catches Fire on Highway 101 in Atascadero

 
ATASCADERO, CA (July 5, 2020) – A passenger was killed following a rollover crash Sunday afternoon in Atascadero, CHP officials said.
 
The crash happened around 2:00 p.m. on northbound Highway 101 at Del Rio Road.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, a car carrying young Peninsula men was traveling north on the highway when it swerved to the right shoulder. It then turned sharply back toward the traffic lane, hit an embankment and overturned several times until it landed on its roof.
 
The car then caught fire, and the flames spread to dry grass on the roadside.
 
As a result, one occupant who was seating in the front passenger seat died at the scene. Authorities identified him as 20-year-old Kyle Leventhal of San Mateo.
 
The driver, a 20-year-old Burlingame man, sustained minor to moderate injuries. His two rear passengers, 20-year-old men from Menlo Park and Redwood City, were also injured.
 
The men’s social media accounts indicate they had been classmates at Serra High School in San Mateo, graduating in 2018.
 
The CHP said drugs or alcohol does not appear to have played a factor in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
