LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA (July 2, 2020) – A man who died in a crash Thursday evening last week on Highway 39 has been identified.
 
The fatal crash happened around 10:15 p.m. at mile marker 22.46.
 
Abraham Tapia Jr., 26, of Azusa was driving a Chevrolet Camaro north when he hit a chain-link fence. The car then went over the side of the highway and fell into the San Gabriel Reservoir in the Angeles National Forest.
 
A male passenger, 26-year-old Andres Peralta of Azusa, was able to get out of the car. Paramedics rushed him to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center with a complaint of neck pain.
 
The car was fully submerged in the water. Officers could not find it and the driver. They went back to the scene Friday and Saturday.
 
On Saturday, rescuers successfully lifted the destroyed Camaro and found the body of Tapia Jr. inside.
 
It is unknown if speed or intoxication was a factor in the crash.
 
CHP officials are still investigating the incident.
