Driver and Passenger Dead in Fiery Crash on Avenue 196 near Road 236

STRATHMORE, CA (July 6, 2020) — Two people died in a fiery accident on Avenue 196, west of Road 236 near Strathmore on Saturday, July 4.

According to spokeswoman Shasta Tollefson, the collision happened just after 1:00 a.m. involving a 2015 Honda along Avenue 196. Emergency crews arrived and reported the vehicle caught fire and was fully engulfed with the passenger and driver still inside.

An investigation determined that the Honda moved west on Avenue 196 at an unknown speed. Then the car drifted onto the north shoulder of the road. After that, it slammed into a concrete bridge abutment.

Tollefson said the Honda caught fire and both occupants died at the scene.

The incident is still under investigation. Officials said it is unknown whether alcohol and/or drugs contributed as a factor.
