2 Women Hit by Car on Closed 5 Freeway in Seattle Amid Protest, 1 Killed and 1 Seriously Injured

SEATTLE, WA (July 4, 2020) – A woman died after being struck by a car early Saturday morning on a closed highway in Seattle while protesting against police brutality.

The fatal incident happened around 1:36 a.m. on 5 Freeway.

According to police, a white Jaguar raced toward a group of protesters who were standing behind several parked cars, set up for protection. The car swerved around the other vehicles and slammed into the two protesters, sending them flying into the air.

The driver, who was alone, then fled the scene.

One of the other protesters got in a car and chased the driver for about a mile. He was able to stop him by pulling his car in front of the Jaguar.

Authorities identified the two protesters that were struck as 24-year-old Summer Taylor of Seattle and 32-year-old Diaz Love of Portland, Oregon.

Taylor died in the evening at Harborview Medical Center. Love is in serious condition in the intensive care unit.

Police arrested the suspect, Dawit Kelete of Seattle, and booked him into the King County Correctional Facility. Bail was denied.

Officials were trying to determine the motive as well as where the suspect got onto the freeway.

Our sincere sympathies are with the family and friends of Summer Taylor. We also wish
Diaz Love a steady recovery.
