4 Hospitalized after Chain-Reaction Crash on Highway 1 near Harkins Slough Road

WATSONVILLE, CA (July 3, 2020) – Four people sustained injuries in a chain-reaction crash on Highway 1, Friday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened near Harkins Slough Road, at about 4:00 PM. A truck that was pulling a broken disc harrow came to an emergency stop after the equipment sparked fire. Three vehicles behind the truck also stopped.

However, a van following the vehicles did not stop and crashed into one of the vehicles, triggering a chain-reaction collision.

Two drivers, a 64-year-old Aptos man and a 23-year-old Half Moon Bay woman, suffered major injuries. Meanwhile, two other drivers, a 28-year-old man and a 36-year-old man, both from Watsonville, sustained moderate injuries. Emergency crews transported all four victims to a hospital for treatment.

It is unknown whether or not the driver of the truck sustained injuries.

CHP ruled out drugs and alcohol as factors in the collision. Authorities will release additional information once it becomes available.

When behind the wheel, always remember to stay in your lane and be mindful of where you are heading. Keep your eyes on the road, and avoid distracting activities. Stay on guard and drive defensively, anytime and anywhere.
