Mezmerize Atencio Killed, Estevan Chavez Arrested after Crash on Highway 528 [Rio Rancho, NM]
12-Year-Old Mezmerize Atencio Dies after High-Speed Crash in Rio Rancho
RIO RANCHO, NM (June 1, 2020) – Rio Rancho Police have charged 19-year-old Estevan Miguel Chavez in the car crash that killed a girl on June 1.
According to the Rio Rancho Police Department, the incident happened at about 3:00 PM. A red Monte Carlo, driven by Chavez, was traveling more than 100 miles per hour. Then, the vehicle slammed into a Nissan Maxima near Barbara Loop. Due to unknown circumstances, two other vehicles became involved in the crash.
Emergency crews pronounced 12-year-old Mezmerize Atencio, a passenger in the Nissan, dead at the scene. Meanwhile, paramedics transported the 16-year-old Nissan driver to the University of New Mexico Hospital for treatment of great bodily injury.
The occupants of the other vehicles involved did not sustain serious injuries in the collision.
Officials charged Chavez with vehicular homicide and great bodily harm by vehicle, as well as reckless driving, speeding, and not using a turn signal. As per reports, Chavez has been released from jail but he’s not allowed to drive any vehicle.
Authorities will release additional information once it becomes available.
