Lisa Day Dead, Desiderio Garcia Detained in Fatal Ranchos De Taos Car Crash

RANCHOS DE TAOS, NM (July 3, 2020) – Officials pronounced 39-year-old Lisa Marie Day dead at the scene after a car crash on Highway 240 on Sunday, June 28.

At around 7:00 p.m. Sunday, New Mexico State Police officers rushed to the crash on Highway 240. They found out that 48-year-old Desiderio Garcia drove a car that left the roadway. Then the car struck the tree near Calle Martinez and his passenger, Day, died at the scene.

According to Officer Ray Wilson, they determined that alcohol contributed as a factor in the crash. They also said that seatbelts do not appear to have been properly utilized.

Authorities arrested Garcia and booked him into the Taos County Adult Detention Center on homicide by vehicle. Court records show officers charged him on June 18 with driving with an open container. He has also been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving damage to a vehicle, failure to yield, and no proof of insurance.

Taos Magistrate Court Judge Ernest Ortega required a $5,000 unsecured appearance bond for Garcia on Tuesday, June 30. In the June 18 case, Judge Sara Blankenhorn set a $2,000 unsecured appearance bond.

The incident is still under investigation.

Sincere condolences to the loved ones and friends of Lisa Day.
