Gerald John and Ray Lee Jim Identified as Fleeing Suspects Killed in Gallup Crash
GALLUP, NM (June 5, 2020) – Authorities identified 25-year-old Gerald John of Brimhall, New Mexico and 21-year-old Ray Lee Jim of Wingate, New Mexico as the suspects killed in a pursuit crash on June 5.
According to the New Mexico State Police, the incident happened shortly before midnight. Two Gallup Police officers attempted to stop the suspects accused of brandishing a gun.
Initially, the officers contacted the suspects in the parking lot of the Redwood Lodge motel. However, the suspects fled the area in a white Dodge pickup truck. The officers quickly followed the suspects towards 40 Freeway.
Dash camera video recordings showed that at multiple points of the pursuit, the pickup truck was on the wrong side of the road. In addition, the officers observed that the truck had a flat tire as it approached the freeway.
During the chase, the duo threw a tire, a gas canister, a shovel, bicycles, and several cinder blocks at the officers. A State Police sergeant then fired a shotgun at the suspects. A short time later, the suspect vehicle slammed into an oncoming semi-truck.
Officers pronounced John and Jim dead at the scene. However, it remains unclear whether or not the gunshot reached the suspects.
The occupants of the semi-truck did not sustain injuries.
Authorities will release additional information once it becomes available.
