Child Killed, 7 Injured in Car Accident on Highway 117 [Cibola County, NM]

4-Year-Old Dead in Solo Car Crash in Cibola County

 
CIBOLA COUNTY, NM (June 28, 2020) – A 4-year-old child died and seven other people sustained injuries in a car accident on Highway 117, Sunday morning.
 
According to the New Mexico State Police, the incident happened at about 4:28 AM. For unknown reasons, a 2003 Ford Explorer left the roadway. Then, the vehicle rolled over near milepost 36, just south of Grants. The impact of the crash ejected the child from the vehicle.
 
The Office of the Medical Investigator pronounced the child dead at the scene.
 
Meanwhile, the driver and six other passengers, including a 27-year-old male, an 18-year-old female, an 11-year-old, an 8-year-old, and two five-year-olds, sustained unspecified injuries. Emergency responders transported the driver and five passengers to Cibola General Hospital in Grants.
 
An air ambulance transported the 18-year-old passenger to the UNM Hospital in Albuquerque with more serious injuries.
 
NMSP ruled out alcohol as a factor in the fatal crash. However, investigators noted that the driver and his passengers did not utilize their seatbelts properly. Based on the outcome of the investigation, charges may be pending for the driver.
