24-Year-Old Man Killed, Diver Arrested in Pierce County DUI Crash
PIERCE COUNTY, WA (June 30, 2020) – A 24-year-old man died in a rollover accident on National Forest Road 7810 in the Carbonado/Fairfax area Friday evening.
According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s office, first responders arrived at the scene at about 11 p.m. They found that a black 1974 Ford truck had rolled 10 times down the hill and pinned against a tree.
The 20-year-old driver climbed out to get help. However, the 24-year-old passenger remained unconscious and trapped inside the truck that was 300 feet down the cliff.
It took 20 search and rescue personnel to rescue the 24-year-old male passenger. They lowered equipment down the cliff, climbed down to the truck, and then cut the roof off and pulled the passenger out.
Paramedics subsequently airlifted the man to Harborview Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Meantime, the deputies said the driver of the truck appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. They transported him to a nearby hospital for a blood draw search warrant.
Police arrested the driver and booked him into Pierce County Jail for vehicular homicide. Additional charges are pending based on the results of the DUI blood draw.
