Ernest Valenzuela Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash on Lander Avenue in Turlock
TURLOCK, CA (June 22, 2020) – A man was killed following a motorcycle hit-and-run crash early Monday morning in Turlock.
The crash happened just before 2:00 a.m. at the intersection of Lander Avenue and Greenway Avenue.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a Volkswagen was traveling south on Lander Avenue when it turned left toward Greenway Avenue. It then crashed into the motorcycle that was heading north. The impact ejected rider into the roadway.
Deputies arrived and found the rider lying in the northbound lanes near his motorcycle. They pronounced him dead at the scene.
Officials identified the victim as Joey Branco, 50, of Atwater.
About 40 minutes later, Ernest Valenzuela, 49, called police from his nearby home to report he had been involved in the crash and fled the scene.
Police arrested Valenzuela on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. They said the suspect was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Further investigation into the crash is underway.
