Fatal Rollover Crash on Highway 1 in Big Sur
BIG SUR, CA (June 2, 2020) – A woman died following a rollover crash Tuesday afternoon last week in Big Sur, according to the CHP.
The crash happened around 3:40 p.m. on Highway 1 at mile marker 43, just south of Nepenthe and a quarter-mile north of COAST gallery.
An eyewitness told officers that a white 1997 Jeep Cherokee had spun out of control and went off the side of the highway. He said the Jeep nearly clipped him as it crossed into oncoming traffic. It then overturned and plunged about 800 feet off cliff.
The driver of the SUV, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected during the crash. Her dog was also ejected and suffered a broken leg.
Search and Rescue found the woman dead on the side of the cliff, officials said. An emergency veterinarian took the dog for treatment.
Authorities only identified the woman as a 26-year-old Big Sur resident.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
