Robert Forbes Struck by Car During a Black Lives Matter Protest in Bakersfield

Robert Forbes Dies after Pedestrian Accident at Bakersfield Protest

 
BAKERSFIELD, CA (June 9, 2020) – A man identified as Robert Forbes died after a car struck him at a protest against police brutality on Wednesday, June 3.
 
According to a GoFundMe page set up for his family, Forbes was among a group of peaceful protesters that marched through the city. Around 100 people walked in the westbound lanes of California Avenue at about 10:20 p.m., with several cars slowly following behind them.
 
According to police, traffic flowed as normal in eastbound lanes, where the speed limit is 45 mph. As Forbes crossed the street, police said based on estimates from our MCIT, the driver was traveling at a speed of 45mph.
 
Video from the protest shows marchers chasing the vehicle after Forbes was struck.
 
The driver stopped around 150 yards away from the scene and waited for police. In the meantime, officers — including undercover units at the front of the protest — started tending to Forbes.

As of Sunday, the driver was not arrested. McCauley said there was no evidence of impairment or speeding at the time of the incident.
