2 Hospitalized after 7-Car Crash on 101 Freeway [Santa Barbara, CA]

Seven-Vehicle Crash on 101 Freeway at Turnpike Road Offramp

 
SANTA BARBARA, CA (June 5, 2020) – Two people sustained injuries in a seven-vehicle crash on 101 Freeway, Friday evening.
 
According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the incident happened at about 5:19 PM. A Ford Mustang GT was southbound on 101 Freeway in the no. 1 lane. As the vehicle approached the Turnpike Road offramp, the driver turned across all lanes of traffic, collided with six other vehicles, and exited the freeway.
 
Firefighters had to extricate two people from wrecked vehicles. Then, the victims were transported to a hospital. One of the victims is in critical condition, while the other victim sustained moderate injuries.
 
Responding crews temporarily closed the southbound ramp at Turnpike to make way for clearing operations and an investigation. Motorists experienced delays for only one lane was open to traffic.
 
Investigators believe that speed played a role in the crash. Authorities will release additional information once it becomes available.
