Maria Ortiz Dead in Rear-End Crash on Rice Avenue [Oxnard, CA]

Maria Ortiz Fatally Injured after Rear-End Crash on Rice Avenue

 
OXNARD, CA (June 8, 2020) – Authorities have identified the Oxnard resident killed in a rear-end crash as 41-year-old Maria Perez Ortiz.
 
The crash took place on Rice Avenue at Channel Islands Boulevard on Saturday, June 6. According to the California Highway Patrol, they received reports of the incident at 7:55 a.m. on northbound Rice, east of Oxnard city limits.
 
Ortiz was a passenger in a 2017 Nissan SUV that was stopped at a red light on northbound Rice at Channel Islands Boulevard. A 14-year-old boy drove the Nissan, the CHP reported. Perez Ortiz and the teen both had their seat belts on.
 
At the same time, a 2000 Lexus SUV driven by a 33-year-old Lake Forest woman moved northbound on Rice.
 
The Lexus struck the rear of the stopped Nissan for undetermined reasons, CHP officials said. The Lexus driver did not wear a seat belt, authorities stated.
 
Perez Ortiz died at the scene.
 
The teen driving the Nissan and the woman driving the Lexus both had major injuries. Medics rushed them by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center.
 
Officials arrested the Lexus driver on suspicion of driving under the influence.
