Student Pilot Dies after His Plane Crashes into Orcutt School Playground

 
ORCUTT, CA (May 20, 2020) – A pilot who died after his plane crashed into an Orcutt school playground two weeks ago has been identified by authorities.
 
The crash happened around 10:45 a.m. May 20, at Ralph Dunlap Elementary School, in the 1200 block of Oak Knoll Road.
 
According to reports, a single-engine Cirrus SR20 aircraft took off from Van Nuys Airport. For unknown reasons, the plane plummeted from the sky, slammed on a basket court and burst into flames.
 
The student pilot died at the scene. Authorities identified him as Tigran Garabedyan, 38, of Burbank. He was the sole occupant of the aircraft.
 
Because of COVID-19 closures, students were not on campus at the time.
 
Garabedyan began his flight training in September 2019, his flight instuctor told investigators. Since then, Garabedyan had accumulated about 50 flight hours.
 
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are continuing to investigate the crash, and no cause has been determined.
